Yeah, but if you're at a conference and you announce that you're are running a backchannel on #myconferance attendees can't just sign up and contribute to it.
They would need to get an invite from someone who is already a member.
At barcamp we announced the channel at the morning and people who were attending signed up throughout the day. Also people who saw mention of it through other sources signed up. This wouldn't happen if they all needed an invite. People just wouldn't bother.
I hope it's not long but other services that google has taken over have had restricted registrations for a long time. E.g. Jotspot registrations have been restricted since they were taken over in Feb. 2006!
Anyway the point is that they are restricted now and for as long as they remain restricted jaiku is not much use for spontaneous backchannelling.

Can't "insiders" send invitations to people to join up?

The restriction on open admissions to Jaiku is only temporary.

@topgold - what does temporary mean?

Oops, sorry, Feb. 2006 in previous comment should be Oct. 2006.

@topgold: every time Google buys a service they seem to break it. I doubt if the signups will be available again for quite some time
