From what I've read so far, I don't think a unified sign on is part of what they're working on. Could be wrong though.
They appear to be working on standards for 3 things: Profile Information (user data), Friends Information (social graph) and Activities (news feeds).
Imagine if facebook and myspace agree to implement these standards.
Say I have a facebook account and I want to add my brother as a friend but he has a myspace account. I don't need to be able to login to myspace - facebook can ask myspace for the profile information for that user and facebook can add that info to my friend list. So its not about being able to login to all the different social networks but it's about being able to share data between these networks.
Another cool use case: Imagine if wordpress implements a plugin that implements these standards. Now every wordpress blog in the world can become part of of a social network. I don't want people to be able to log into my blog but I want them to be able to add me as a contact with my blog as my profile page in the OpenSocial network.
Of course I'm just speculating here - it'll become clearer when we can actually look at the standard.

Your post seems biased. Not sure where you get the "many users" from. From what I've been reading this problem only affects users who are upgrading and have the 3rd party Unsanity application enhancer installed http://unsanity.com/haxies/ape/.
This is an app that basically hacks the OS to let users alter the behaviour and appearance of OSX. It's a dodgy piece of software and it's not the first time it has caused problems for people who use it.

@ellybabes, @conoro. Re previous discussion about implementing custom barcamp software. Myself and @ozone spent a couple of hours one evening working on this. Then he was off to states and I was busy with finishing work, relocating, barcamp Galway and other stuff and since it was never going to be done for barcamp Galway it went on the backburner.
It might be possible to resurrect it if the organizers of the next barcamp were interested. However they probably have their own ideas on how they want to do this. The podcamp system seemed to work well and might be an easier way to go.

@topgold - what does temporary mean?
I hope it's not long but other services that google has taken over have had restricted registrations for a long time. E.g. Jotspot registrations have been restricted since they were taken over in Feb. 2006!
Anyway the point is that they are restricted now and for as long as they remain restricted jaiku is not much use for spontaneous backchannelling.

Yeah, but if you're at a conference and you announce that you're are running a backchannel on #myconferance attendees can't just sign up and contribute to it. They would need to get an invite from someone who is already a member.
At barcamp we announced the channel at the morning and people who were attending signed up throughout the day. Also people who saw mention of it through other sources signed up. This wouldn't happen if they all needed an invite. People just wouldn't bother.

I've only ever seen 1 episode of the IT crowd (Series 2, Ep 1) and I didn't find it very funny. But I just watched 3 clips on you tube and all three made me laugh out loud. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkiDaU0CBRs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5IBJaLU3v4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2Q6xbEZ-f0
